VEVA has had our popular Saturday Meetup gatherings at local coffee shops and various venues across greater Vancouver since 2007.  In March 2020 we had to stop meeting in person because of COVID19.

We are keeping that social connection going, and inviting the general public to join in and get to know us!

    Saturdays, 11am-1pm Pacific Time
Join in to socialize and discuss all things electric!

OK just finished with this meeting and have a couple of comments.  I hope this means that there will never been any true meetings in the future because as much as this makes sense at this time, nothing beats meeting face to face.  So I hope the people in charge here don't commit totally to this medium.

Second, I think breaking off to sub groups would get more people involved.  I wanted to chat with a couple of people and not all 50 with some specific questions that others would probably not be interested in.  Also, I feel that it cannot be avoided but it seems only a select number of speakers spoke up and this medium leans towards this outcome.  With 50 people in a face to face this would never happen as we tend to gravitate towards smaller group discussions.  So if ZOOM can accommodate this style then I am all in for it.  Otherwise, I may skip these weekly talkathons.

    Hi Tim

We certainly are not going to forego face to face meetings, we are only reacting the current conditions.  That being said, there is a much broader connectivity we've achieved - people from across the Province of BC were on the call on Saturday, and I think this will lead to at least some of our meetings going forward using an online format, as a supplement to in person gatherings.  What we know is that the technical requirements to do this properly is the next step up.  I hope we can build that ability in the weeks ahead.

Sub-Groups.  Yes!  We didn't get to it this time, but we will go there next week.  My personal concern is the way Zoom does things.  If I'm not mistaken, the host can easily randomly assign people in equal numbers to the number of breakout rooms a host specifies, but if people want to go to a specific one for a specified topic -- the host has to manually do this. If we have 53 people on the call, you can see the problem.  Anyway, as I said, IMHO, Zoom is the best of the worst.  On-line systems still have a long way to go, and C19 might be the crisis that makes improvements happen.

    Thank you for your post!

I agree that it is important to explore Zoom's breakout rooms feature. It does put a bit more of a burden on the host, but let's try it and see.

Perhaps we could rotate the host duties from week to week to share the effort.

Thanks for your reply.  Most encouraging and I think you are accommodating the needs of the group with a new technology so I guess they will be some growing pains.  We will bear with it and I very happy to hear your thoughts on the future of our gatherings.

Here is the link to the video we will be showing at the May 9th coffee meetup. It will be one of topics for the breakout room sessions. I will post a little later what the topics will be, and of course there will be the random discussion rooms as well to let people chat about whatever they want. You can send video submissions to me for future meetings at ron.burton@veva.ca.  Thanks

Her is the Zoom link to join our coffee meetup on Saturday May 9 between 11:00 AM and 1:00 PM.  The format is a relaxed chat style. Curious about electric vehicles (EVs).  Why not join us? We have lots of experienced people that are more than happy to answer your questions.

In case you missed it, the Vancouver Electric Car Club has invited VEVA members and the public to their online Saturday meetup. They will be hosting presentations from the Saskatchewan EV Association and Kent Rathwell of Sun Country.  Their meeting happens immediately after ours at 1:00 PM.
